Ancient Babylonian astrologers discovered these thirteen constellations yet omitted Ophiuchus – the son of Apollo – so the signs will be divided equally into twelve because of the rotation of the Sun and the four elements (Earth, Wind, Water and Fire). Between the Sagittarius and Scorpius, the Sun travels through Ophiuchus for 13th days only.
The Ophiuchus constellation features a man grasping a snake and is more commonly known as Serpentarius, the Serpent Holder – his body dividing a large snake in two, the symbol used today for medical staff.
